The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

We present a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of horror films: Sit down with your loved one and stream Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it may seem like standard body horror, but within Together resides a deep examination about the ways we decide to love one another.

A Debut Feature Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the actors infuse a special spark to their roles, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The plot commences when Millie and Tim relocate from the metropolis to the country for professional reasons. A familiar plot device, sure, but that’s largely where the cliches end. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the two tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence starts to affect the pair. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The entire film is a methodically building fright fest, interspersing elements of fever-dream horrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes during something horrific). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and delivers them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and distant from his support system. He fears the notion of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision is that he refrains from painting one partner or the other the obvious villain.

The couple grapple with the type of challenges that arise in long-term unions after ten years. Fundamentally, they continue to care for each other. They find humor with each other, offer support, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these anxieties of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism does not come across as hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Conversely, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could function as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your partner and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can embark on right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu as of this moment.
