Around 50 automobiles have been covered with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.

Automobiles, building surfaces and postal boxes were defaced, occasionally with swastikas, they reported in a release.

Law enforcement state they were contacted during the night on Wednesday night, when a man discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued substance.

The fluid had been drawn in the form of a swastika, they reported.

Law enforcement then located multiple other smeared cars and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.

Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under laws prohibiting the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.

Law enforcement say preliminary tests suggest the substance was probably human blood.

"There is still no clue as to where it came from; authorities are not yet cognizant of any physical harm in association with the occurrence," they stated.

Local authorities announced they were attempting "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the residents for information.

A senior representative said the vandalism left him stunned and needed to be resolved promptly.

"This act strikes at the center of Hanau and revives the wounds of the extremist terrorist attack in 2020," he posted on social media, mentioning the killing of nine victims by a assailant aiming at individuals of immigrant origin in 2020.
